Chopsticks: history and meaning of custom

From an ancient tradition in China and Japan, people eat with chopsticks, but not with a spoon or fork. Moreover, the tradition is revered not only in these two countries, but also the inhabitants of Vietnam and Korea are also constantly using chopsticks. Moreover, over the past few decades, this tradition has spread throughout the world as an integral part of Chinese and Japanese cuisine, the main dishes of which have appealed to many residents of other countries, and, accordingly, have become quite popular. It became interesting to us how sticks became a device for eating food and why the people of China and Japan still use principally only them.

History of the appearance of tradition

According to the legend, the chopsticks were invented by one of the mystical rulers of China, who once, trying to get hot meat from the cauldron, just decided to use two sticks from the tree. As this helped him to get his meat and not to get burned with boiling water, the method was adopted and, in the course of time, was used more often, turning into a tradition. The first written recollection of the usage of chopsticks can be found in the texts of the 3rd millennium BC. Although according to archaeologists, the emergence of chopsticks, as a traditional kitchen appliance, can be dated even earlier - about 9,000 thousand years ago. Well, in any case, the custom is so entrenched in the Asian culture that it is still strictly observed, acquiring new meanings for each generation.
